Drew Thorn

Drew Thorn is the pen-name for Andrew Tarbox. Andrew was proud and very lucky to grow up on a dairy farm in upstate New York a few miles from Vermont. The hard work and play helped shape his character. He attended Tamarac High School which was small enough that everyone knew each other and remain close even to this day. At Cornell University he was an active member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and was fortunate to conduct graduate level research in Plant Physiology with his best friend, Joe Doro all four years and our research was published.

His professional life is marked by transformation. He began in the farm equipment business and migrated in the early 80s to the nascent personal computer industry. Long before the IBM PC and MSDOS, he was marketing and selling accounting software to farmers across the country. Next, he found himself developing the Public Access Terminal which allowed people to access email in public locations when laptops weighed 30 pounds and were barely portable. Here he learned about smart cards, a credit card-sized plastic card with a computer chip to store information.

In the early days of the smart card they were used to securely store value, so people didn’t need coins for public phones. He developed smart card-based public phones and management software for phone companies around the world. He transitioned this expertise to manage the migration from magnetic stripe to smart card technology at MasterCard globally. He was one of the founders of the Smart Card Forum and has spoken at conferences around the world.

In the late nineties, he left MasterCard to start a dot com company in Palo Alto to use smart cards for frequent shopper programs. The ubiquity of smart cards led him to join Booz Allen Hamilton where he assisted multiple government agencies in the US and Australia to utilize smart cards for secure access to facilities and computer networks. He leveraged this knowledge of high security to expand the use of trusted computing in corporate networks.

He has been fortunate to have traveled across the globe visiting 6 continents and having lived in multiple cities in the US and Australia.

Over all these years Andrew loved writing. This included chapters in books on smart cards, corporate and government proposals, and numerous technical white papers. Transitioning again today he is loving the freedom of writing novels where the only limits are what you can imagine.

Today he lives with his family in Ozarks of Missouri enjoying the calm of Midwest life.
